As one of the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures, liposuction has helped millions of people around the world to enhance the appearance of their bodies.
Despite its popularity, numerous misconceptions exist about liposuction, including the procedure’s safety, the kinds of results patients can expect and how much downtime is involved.
Are you interested in liposuction and want to know the facts? Dr. C.B. Boswell and the team at the Body Aesthetic Plastic Surgery & Skincare Center bust five of the most common myths about liposuction below.
Myth #1: Liposuction Is a Way to Lose Weight
Liposuction removes fat cells from specific areas of patients’ bodies, including their hips, thighs, abdomen and back, to improve the shape and contour. But liposuction is not a weight loss treatment.
Patients should be within 10 to 15 pounds of their goal weight before having liposuction and expect to lose five pounds or less after the procedure is done.
Myth #2: Liposuction Is Dangerous
Every surgical procedure has risks and potential complications. But as long as an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon performs the procedure, liposuction is no riskier than any other cosmetic surgery. Plus, the downtime is typically less than other treatments (around two weeks).
Myth #3: Fat Removed During Liposuction Comes Back
Any fat cells removed during a liposuction treatment are gone for good. However, the remaining fat cells in a person’s body are still able to grow if a healthy lifestyle is not maintained.
Myth #4: Liposuction Treats Stretch Marks and Cellulite
Stretch marks are scars left on the skin after a period of significant growth, and cellulite is the result of subcutaneous fat pushing through the connective tissue beneath a person’s skin.
Liposuction removes fat cells from a person’s body and doesn’t directly involve the skin tissue, so it is not a means of treating stretch marks or cellulite.
Myth #5: Only Women Get Liposuction
This couldn’t be further from the truth. Liposuction treatments are commonly sought by both men and women. Men often have the procedure performed on their chest, love handles or abdomen. Anyone who is in good health and wants to improve the contour of their body can get liposuction.
